As an observer, Bella captures the essence of her shifting environment, infusing her paintings with threads of memory that form the foundation of her practice. Going beyond representation, Bella's artistic vision begins with photography, tapping into personal archives and experiences to initiate her creative process. Her work explores the convergence of reality and memory, evoking introspection and wonder. Bella proudly exhibited select works from her 'Rock Pool Series' at the November 2021-2022 and 2023 SCAD Open Studio Juried Exhibitions. Her recent developments in figurative work earned her a place in the SCAD annual literary arts journal, Port City Review, in both 2022 and 2023, with further works from this collection being featured. Additionally, Bella has showcased lithographs from her exploration of lithography and select paintings from her 'Everyday' series in the group show 'Things That Have Never Been' at Savannah Gallery's Sulfur Studios. Memories, are elusive and eternal, residing in a realm that defies linear time. Through portraying children—siblings and cousins—I revive my cherished childhood memories. During those formative years, my perception, thoughts, and play unfolded in ways distinct to that time. Today, I embrace a new form of play. Photography, with its fixed temporality, serves as a starting point to navigate between past and present. It is here that fusion takes shape, becoming my new realm of play. Memories materialize through photographs, tangible resources that mediate my personal archives. The painted scenes are characterized by multi-layered surfaces, seamlessly merging the spatial reality captured in the photographs with the organizing principle of memory, one steeped in personal significance, that rises on the painted surface. Infused with the joyful spirit of childhood, I strive to maintain this optimistic atmosphere in my artwork. The canvas breathes with vibrant color, encapsulating the integrity of the photographs whilst seamlessly transitioning into the expressive language of painting. Memory's aura surpasses realism, guiding my artistic process. Figure and environment hold equal significance. This democratic application of paint reflects the ongoing search and placement of memories within the scene itself as I craft its composition. I aim not only to recollect but to create an ideal surface for the stage of memory to unfold. In essence, my body of work transcends individual paintings, forming an iterative exploration of lived memories. I had to know your rhythm, when would there be a place for me to stand? I would. It was worth it, I could disappear I was quiet in awe of your beauty, your sound. I walked the rocks for hours, each pool glittering until in view. Like candy in a crystal bowl the color within beams, rippling pattern moves with the water. Occasionally I’d reach in, interrupting your dance, there had been a shell so attractive I might take it. It never looked as glossy as it did in the water, dull in my possession. I could only enjoy the pool in a direct way, the wonder was the whole. A sequence so elemental it endures unnoticed until we are cradled by the vines, stems, and leaves that thrust out in great plumes that form the canopy over us. Trees are the bystanders in our environment, they coexist quietly taking command as the louder voices soften. Trees are wisdom, they reach upwards interweaving with one another, to speak a language we just can’t grasp. The contemplative way of the tree is a posture we have lost in our time of immediacy.
